Arsenal are prepared to go head to head with Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Manchester United forward Anthony Martial in January.

According to Ekrem Konur, Arsenal have joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Anthony Martial. The Manchester United forward is expected to leave the club in the upcoming January transfer window after losing his spot in the first-team this season.

Tottenham had been recently linked with a move for Martial, with Nuno Espirito Santo determined to add more offensive options at his disposal. But according to Konur, they are set to face stiff competition from North London rivals Arsenal, who are considering a winter swoop for the United outcast.

Formerly of AS Monaco, Martial hasn’t had an overly successful spell at Old Trafford, since arriving here in 2015. He has made over 250 competitive appearances for the club, enjoying good form here and there, but the consistency has simply not been there, leading many fans to get frustrated with the Frenchman.

Martial was recently a subject of major criticism this week, after producing a woeful display in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though, refused to further propel the slander on Martial during the post-game presser.

His performances haven’t deterred Arsenal either, who are prepared to splash the cash on the struggling Frenchman in an attempt to bolster their offensive ranks.

From a tactical perspective, Martial could be a potential replacement for Alexandre Lacazette. The former Lyon forward has his contract expiring at the end of the season and the player has been linked with a move to West Ham recently. A potential January exit could open the door for Arsenal to make the move for Martial.

The Manchester United forward is a more versatile option upfront, which means he can settle in well alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. However, the apparent interest from Tottenham Hotspur should make this saga exciting, knowing the Lilywhites also make a strong case for singing the 25-year-old.

As for United themselves, Martial’s exit should free up some much-needed space in the offensive unit. But with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani in the final stages of their respective careers, the Red Devils may need to invest in young forwards in order to build a sustainable legacy at Old Trafford over the coming years.
