Real Madrid are reportedly set to monitor AS Monaco and France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni throughout the season as they eye a summer move.
According to a report from Spanish publication Defensa Central, Real Madrid will monitor AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni over the course of the ongoing campaign as they line up a move for him in 2022.
Tchouameni came through the youth ranks at Bordeaux and made quite an impression at the first-team level at a very young age. This led to a transfer to Monaco in the January transfer window last year. And after a slow start, the 21-year-old has grown into one of the best young midfielders in Ligue 1.
Indeed, Tchouameni was named the Ligue 1 Best Young Player of the Year for the 2020/21 season after helping the Principality outfit to a top-four finish. The youngster has started the new season on a strong note as well and has even managed to break into the France national team, impressing during the World Cup Qualifiers earlier this month.
Tchouameni’s rapid rise in French football has seen him attract a lot of admirers, most of them from the Premier League, with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United interested. Now, it has emerged that Real Madrid, too, hold an interest in the 21-year-old French international, as per the aforementioned report.
Real Madrid strengthened their midfield unit this summer with the signing of another generational French talent in the form of Eduardo Camavinga. However, with Luka Modric in the final year of his contract and getting close to the end of his career, another new addition to the midfield department will become a necessity for the Spanish capital club.
Furthermore, Toni Kroos is not getting any younger and has struggled with fitness problems of late. And considering that there is no natural backup to Casemiro in the defensive midfield role, someone like Tchouameni, who can operate in multiple positions in the centre of the park, can be a fine addition for Real Madrid.
The report states that Tchouameni has been on the radars of Los Blancos since the time Zinedine Zidane was the manager. Now, they are set to continue to keep a close watch on the French international as they consider making a move to sign him in the summer transfer window next year. It remains to be seen if such a transfer does materialise next year or whether Real Madrid look at different options.
