Real Madrid are reportedly ready to sell 26-year-old left-back Ferland Mendy in January itself, with the Frenchman not part of Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.
According to a report from Spanish publication Fichajes, Real Madrid are mulling over the possibility of French defender Ferland Mendy in the winter transfer window and could demand a sum of €50 million for his services.
Mendy, a former Paris Saint-Germain youth academy trainee, burst into the limelight at Le Havre, before earning a move to Olympique Lyon in the summer of 2017. Having made rapid strides with the Ligue 1 outfit, the 26-year-old left-back continued to progress rapidly, prompting Real Madrid to take a punt on him in the summer of 2019.
Upon arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Frenchman found himself behind Marcelo in the pecking order, but gradually usurped the first-choice spot, going on to make 70 appearances in which he has produced a tally of three goals and four assists.
However, things have changed for the seven-time capped French international over the past few months. Having picked up an injury late in last season, Mendy missed the start of the new term under Carlo Ancelotti. And, with Miguel Gutierrez making the most of his chances, the ex-Lyon ace finds himself in a difficult situation.
Indeed, Ancelotti has Marcelo, who is the club captain now, and Gutierrez as options for the left-back slot, while both Nacho and summer signing David Alaba can also easily fill in if needed, leaving Mendy’s future at the Spanish capital club under a cloud of certainty.
And, as per the report, the Merengues are now seriously contemplating the possibility of selling Mendy in the January transfer window. Real Madrid have made some major sales over the summer, cashing in on players like Martin Odegaard, Raphael Varane, Oscar Rodriguez, among others, that have helped them stay in a relatively healthy financial position.
And with club president Florentino Perez eyeing an ambitious double swoop for superstar attacking duo of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, selling players that are not in the plans of the manager makes sense so that they have enough funds as well as room on the wage bill to accommodate the new signings.
The report goes on to state that Real Madrid will likely demand a transfer fee of €50 million for Mendy, who is attracting interest from clubs in the Premier League as well as Serie A. It now remains to be seen if a January transfer exit does materialise for the 26-year-old Frenchman.
