Tottenham Hotspur have identified Stefan de Vrij as a potential target next summer, with Fabio Paratici keen on signing the Inter Milan centre-back.

Not even a week since the transfer window was slammed to a shut, it appears Tottenham Hotspur have already begun preparation and planning for the next summer window. At least that is what the latest report from Fichajes claim, with managing director Fabio Paratici apparently setting his sights on Stefan de Vrij.

The 29-year-old Inter Milan defender had been linked with a move to North London last month as well, shortly after the departure of Toby Alderweireld. A move did not materialise, with the club ultimately opting to bring in Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero on a big-money deal.

However, Tottenham are still keeping close tabs on the situation of de Vrij, whose current contract in Milan expires in 2023. There has been no indication of a contract extension for the Dutch international so far, while the club also brought in defensive prodigy Zinho Vanheusden late in the window.

Although the young Belgian has been loaned to Genoa to gain some experience in Italian football, it is apparent that Inter Milan have identified him as a potential replacement for de Vrij. who has racked up 126 appearances in all competitions, since joining the Nerazzurri in 2018.

During his ongoing three-year spell in Milan, the Dutch international has created a formidable partnership alongside Milan Skriniar and Alessandro Bastoni, notably starring in the club’s Serie A winning campaign last term.

His experience and pedigree at the highest level of football coupled with his leadership skill have made de Vrij an appealing alternative for Tottenham. There is no hiding the fact that the club is keen on adding some experience to the backline and the 29-year-old Inter Milan ace fits the bill perfectly.

However, the Lilywhites’ pursuit of de Vrij will rely heavily on how the club performs this season, knowing he will also be courted by various other top teams across Europe.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have started the season on a positive note so far, securing three wins in three matches and are leading the Premier League table during the international break. But it remains to be seen whether or not they can maintain their consistency and avoid breaking apart as they did last season, under Jose Mourinho.
