Barcelona have reportedly held talks with RB Leipzig over the possibility of signing former academy prospect Dani Olmo on deadline day.
According to an update on Twitter from The Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath, Barcelona have opened negotiations with German giants RB Leipzig to explore the prospects of re-signing Dani Olmo.
The 23-year-old Spanish attacking midfielder is no stranger to Barcelona as he spent seven years at the club’s La Masia academy between 2007 and 2014. After leaving Catalonia for Croatia that year, Olmo gradually grew into a first-team regular for Dinamo Zagreb and quickly developed himself into one of the most exciting youngsters across Europe.
Olmo went on to make 114 appearances for the Croatian giants, attracting interest from several big clubs across Europe. However, the Spaniard ended up signing for Leipzig in the January transfer window last year. And, he has gradually grown into a key member of the Bundesliga club, racking up over 70 appearances.
Olmo has also managed to break into the Spanish national team and was, in fact, one of La Roja’s best players, alongside another Barcelona youth product, Pedri, at the UEFA Euro 2020 a few weeks ago.
Now, it is being claimed that Barcelona have asked RB Leipzig about a potential deal for the 23-year-old. The Catalans have been involved in talks with the German outfit over a deal for midfielder Ilaix Moriba. The 18-year-old’s switch to Bundesliga is all but done and during those talks, it seems like Barcelona have broached the subject of Olmo as well.
A versatile operator who can play as a No. 10, out wide on the flanks, as a false-nine, or even as a central midfielder, Olmo would add great value to this Barcelona side in terms of the squad dynamics that he would bring to the table. With Antoine Griezmann struggling to get going in the new season and Philippe Coutinho’s well-documented struggles in Catalonia, the 23-year-old has the potential to be a handy addition.
However, a move this late in the transfer window seems highly unlikely, considering Barcelona’s poor financial health. Add to it, RB Leipzig would likely be reluctant to lose Olmo, after having seen a host of key players like Ibrahima Konate, Dayot Upamecano, Marcel Sabitzer leave the club in the current transfer window.
