Transfer News: Liverpool tracking Mikkel Damsgaard

Jurgen Klopp demands Tottenham vs Liverpool replay.

Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on Sampdoria’s 21-year-old Danish winger Mikkel Damsgaard, who is also a target for Tottenham.

According to Samp News 24 via Il Secolo XIX, Liverpool are keeping tabs on Sampdoria midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard.

The 21-year-old impressed at the summer’s UEFA Euro 2020 for Denmark and has caught the attention of the Merseysiders. In recent years, Liverpool have made many astute buys, and Damsgaard now appears to have made it onto their radar.

Liverpool scouts were recently in attendance as Sampdoria took on AC Milan in Serie A at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. Damsgaard started the match on the left wing but was unable to prevent his side from falling to a 1-0 defeat.

Damsgaard made his senior bow at Danish side Nordsjaelland before moving to Sampdoria in 2020. He has since established himself as a regular for the Italians and has made 39 appearances, scoring two goals and assisting four more.

While his numbers may not seem much impressive, the Dane’s versatility to play several positions accompanied by his excellent promise makes him a top prospect. The Reds recently parted with Georginio Wijnaldum and will need to rebuild their squad in the years to come. The likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are all in their prime but will hit 30 soon.

With Jurgen Klopp’s contract up in 2024, his biggest challenge could be to build his second great Liverpool side. There is every indication that it is already underway. The signings of Ibrahima Konate and Diogo Jota were made with an eye for the future. The latter has started ahead of Firmino in Liverpool’s two games this season. The Portuguese ace scored both times and is making a strong case for himself as a starter.

Replacing Mane and Salah will prove to be a challenge, given their abilities. In Damsgaard, Liverpool could have a potential solution to their left-wing. The Dane is a good dribbler and is not afraid to test the goalkeeper from a distance.

There is much to suggest that he could develop into a world-class player under the right guidance. Klopp has a good track record in that aspect and could provide the fire to let Damsgaard’s talent cook. However, Tottenham are also keen on signing Damsgaard, as they look to create a fluid attacking setup.

At 21, the youngster has his best years ahead of him. He remains very much a work in progress and will need to work on his finishing and passing, among others. Being a part of Liverpool or Tottenham’s frontline is not easy and Damsgaard will need to show he can earn a spot in the side.

The Reds appear to be interested in Damsgaard. However, they are yet to make a move. With the summer window winding down, it remains to be seen if Liverpool will make a late push for the winger or if they end up losing out to rivals Tottenham instead.
