West Ham United are reportedly interested in Sevilla frontman Luuk de Jong as their search for a striker continues.
According to the report in 90min, West Ham United are desperate for striking reinforcement and have now turned their interest towards Sevilla’s target man Luuk de Jong. The Hammers are scouting the market for a striker, predominantly as a back-up to their primary centre-forward Michail Antonio and also have made a couple of failed moves for a few targets.
West Ham have had a frustrating transfer window so far and are still exploring the market for quality reinforcement in key areas to make the squad compatible to compete in Europe as well as have a firm stand in the Premier League, but to their despair, they have only been able to secure a been a loan deal for PSG goalie Alphonse Areola until now.
The club’s inability to get the deals over the line is really concerning as they currently have a very thin squad. Manager David Moyes is hoping to add at least three players before the summer window slams shut. A centre-forward is on top of priority list along with it they are also keen on recruiting a centre-back to bolster their defensive department.
Antonio is the only recognized centre-forward at the club and though he is a brilliant striker with excellent hold-up play, his injury record is worrying. The Irons want to address the issue by bringing in an understudy to Antonio who will share the workload with the Englishman and one of the potential names available is that of Dutch forward Luuk De Jong.
The 30-year-old will be made available for sale as Sevilla have signed Rafa Mir from Wolves. De Jong is a familiar name to the Premier League with his failed loan stint at Newcastle in 2014 coming to mind during which he endured a torrid time, failing to register a single goal in 12 top-flight appearances.
De Jong joined PSV Eindhoven after that, where after a disappointing season he rediscovered his scoring boots and became one of the most prolific strikers in the Eredivisie. He netted 94 goals in 160 appearances for PSV Eindhoven, this consistency forced Sevilla to bring the Dutchman to La Liga in 2019.
Even though his scoring record hasn’t been an impressive one with the La Liga outfit – only 19 goals in 94 appearances, it is the other elements to his game that make him a solid option upfront.
Similar to Antonio, his hold-up play and ability to bring the wingers and pushing full-backs into play is impressive. His tall stature makes sure he is dominant in the air. Most importantly he is very consistent with his fitness – De Jong has featured in at least 39 matches in each of his last six seasons making him a reliable option.
De Jong would be a fantastic addition to Moyes’ side, as he has immense experience of playing in Europe under his belt. What now remains to be seen is whether or not will West Ham move ahead with a bid for De Jong.
