Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly lodged an offer worth €50 million plus an addition €5 million in add-ons for Cristian Romero, also a target for Barcelona.

According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their efforts to secure the services of Cristian Romero in the summer transfer window. The north London giants have offered €50 million plus €5 million in bonuses to land the Argentine international, who is also a target for Barcelona.

Cristian Romero has become one of the hottest properties in the game on the back of a stunning 2020/21 campaign that saw him being adjudged as the best defender in Serie A. Having joined Atalanta on a two-season loan deal from Juventus last summer, the 23-year-old featured 42 times for La Dea last term, chipping in with three goals and five assists along the way.

His exploits have also enabled Romero to break into the Argentine national side, and he was a part of the team that triumphed at the Copa America this summer. At the same time, the player has caught the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the world, and as things stand, Tottenham and Barcelona are hot on his trails.

The interest from Tottenham makes a world of sense, seeing as they are devoid of quality at the back following Toby Alderweireld’s departure this summer. Keeping in mind that Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have flattered to deceive of late, the need to sign a centre-back this summer is imperative for Spurs.

Tottenham, though, are keeping their options open as well and identifying potential alternatives to Romero, with Chris Smalling the latest centre-back on their radar. However, as per Gianluigi Longari, the north Londoners have now tabled a bid worth an initial €50 million in addition to €5 million in bonuses, whereas Barcelona will offer a loan deal with an obligation to buy him next summer.

Speaking of Barcelona, their pursuit of Romero despite signing Eric Garcia is understandable, as Gerard Pique is in the twilight of his career while Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet have been deemed as surplus to requirements at Camp Nou. To that end, Barcelona even submitted an offer for the 23-year-old, which was rejected.

What now remains to be seen is if the Blaugrana’s latest offer of a loan plus obligation to buy is accepted by Atalanta or if Tottenham prevail with their base bid of €50 million. The transfer saga continues, and we still have not heard the last of this.
