Real Madrid are reportedly considering a swoop for former Arsenal defender David Luiz, who is currently a free agent after being released.
According to a report from Spanish publication Defensa Central, La Liga bigwigs Real Madrid have set their sights on the free-agent market to bolster their defence this summer, with former Arsenal star David Luiz emerging as an option.
Real Madrid are in desperate need of a new central defender after having seen club legend and former captain Sergio Ramos bid adieu when his contract with the club ran out. After the veteran superstar signed for Paris Saint-Germain, Los Blancos suffered another bitter blow as Raphael Varane is also on the verge of sealing a transfer to Manchester United.
The two have been mainstays at the heart of the Real Madrid defence for the most part of the last decade and will leave a massive void for new manager Carlo Ancelotti to fill. The Merengues have signed David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich already, but other than that they just have Eder Militao and Nacho as frontline options, leaving them scouring the market for replacements.
A move for Villarreal’s Pau Torres has been mooted of late, but given Real Madrid’s financial situation a move might not be feasible for the Spanish international. As a result, Los Blancos are also keeping an eye out on the free agents available this summer, with David Luiz emerging as one such option that the club are willing to consider.
The Brazilian has become a free agent this summer after his contract with Arsenal ran down and the Gunners chose not to renew it. A vastly experienced customer, Luiz has tasted success at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal in the past.
Even though he might not be the most assured defender at times, the 34-year-old can still be an asset given his knowledge and the fact that he remains available for a Bosman move.
A move to France or Turkey has been touted in the recent past for the veteran centre-half. But should Real Madrid come calling, it is extremely unlikely that Luiz would be able to turn them down. It remains to be seen if the Spanish capital outfit do make a move for the former Arsenal defender or decide to look at other options in the free-agent market.
