Liverpool are reportedly strongly interested in securing Sassuolo winger Domenico Berardi this summer, who himself is tempted by the prospect of joining the Reds.

According to a report from Italian publication La Stampa, as relayed by Transfer Market Web, Premier League bigwigs Liverpool are intent on Sassuolo and Italy winger Domenico Berardi this summer, with the 26-year-old emerging as a ‘major market target’ for the Reds’ management.

Berardi has spent his entire career with Sassuolo, barring a brief loan spell at Juventus. A consistent performer year after year, the 26-year-old has made 291 appearances for the Neroverdi, scoring 105 goals and setting up 67 more. The 2020/21 campaign was one of the winger’s best as he was directly involved in 25 goals (17G, 8A) in just 30 appearances in Serie A.

This has been followed up by an impressive UEFA Euro 2020 tournament where he started in fine form against Switzerland. And even though he has been used as a backup for Federico Chiesa in recent games, Berardi has done well each time he has been called upon. So much so that Liverpool have taken an interest in him.

Liverpool are in need of attacking reinforcements heading into the new season after the likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino underwhelmed in the 2020/21 campaign. In addition to that, the Merseyside giants are set to lose fringe players like Xherdan Shaqiri and Takumi Minamino this summer, which would leave them thin in terms of bench strength.

Furthermore, with Mane and fellow superstar Mohamed Salah set for participation in the Africa Cup of Nations next year, Jurgen Klopp will be without his key duo for a considerable time and needs more quality to support last summer signing Diogo Jota. To that end, a move for Rennes’ Belgian sensation Jeremy Doku has been mooted of late, with Berardi also emerging on their radar.

Indeed, the report states that Berardi has become a major target for Liverpool in the summer transfer market, and the winger, too, is getting tempted by the prospect of playing for a giant club like the Merseysiders, having spent his entire career with a single team.

However, Sassuolo, who are also looking at the prospect of losing another key player in Manuel Locatelli to Arsenal, could demand a transfer fee in the range of €50-€60 million for Berardi, which might complicate matters for Liverpool. In addition to that, the Italian is also being pursued by the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and AC Milan.

It now remains to be seen if the Reds are ready to act upon their strong interest in Berardi or look elsewhere to bolster their attacking unit.
