Real Madrid are reportedly keeping a close watch on the contract situation of Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba, who is starring at the Euro 2020.
According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, La Liga bigwigs Real Madrid are closely monitoring the developments surrounding the contract situation of Manchester United and France midfield maestro Paul Pogba heading into the summer transfer window.
Pogba came back to Manchester United for a second stint in 2016 after spending four years with Juventus. Having returned for a club-record transfer fee, the French international hasn’t always been able to live up to the lofty expectations that came along with it. There have been bright patches throughout, but the level of consistency has been missing.
However, when on song, there are few midfielders out there as he has showcased with the French national team in the ongoing UEFA Euro 2020, emerging as one of the best players on show during the group stages of the summer extravaganza. The 28-year-old did enjoy a good run of form with Manchester United towards the end of the 2020/21 season, playing a key role in their runners-up finish in the Premier League and the Europa League.
Pogba’s future at Old Trafford, as had been the case last summer, is far from certain, however. The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner is entering the final year of his contract with Manchester United, with his agent Mino Raiola kicking up quite the storm last December when he claimed that the midfielder would be on his way out this summer.
However, there may have been a change in that stance, with Manchester United now in talks with the controversial super-agent over offering Pogba a new three-year contract. Nevertheless, La Liga bigwigs Real Madrid are keeping close tabs on the entire situation, with a midfielder a top priority for manager Carlo Ancelotti in the summer.
Real Madrid are in need of a revamp across the field, including the midfield department where Luka Modric is entering the last leg of his glorious career while Toni Kroos is also into his thirties. With the future of the fringe players like Isco, Dani Ceballos non-existent, Los Blancos have been targeting midfield additions, with interest in Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli, among many others.
Pogba, though, is a player that they have admired for long. And while it was thought that Zinedine Zidane’s departure from the managerial role would put an end to the interest, it has not been the case, with Ekrem Konur now claiming that they continue to monitor the situation surrounding his contract closely, along with his former club Juventus.
So, if an extension is not agreed upon, Real Madrid may well make an attempt for the World Cup winner. For now, they are closely watching Pogba, as they are Portugal’s resurgent midfielder Renato Sanches.
