Real Madrid have reportedly struck an agreement with top target Erling Haaland but now need to agree a deal with Borussia Dortmund, who want €175 million for the striker.
According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport’s Alfredo Pedulla, there seems to be a major development in the Erling Haaland transfer saga. The 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker is a man in demand, with almost every top club across Europe pursuing his signing. However, it seems like Real Madrid have taken the first step towards his signing by agreeing terms with the Norwegian international.
Haaland has been on fire over the past couple of years. The 20-year-old produced stunning returns in front of goal for RB Salzburg, which prompted Borussia Dortmund to invest in him in January 2020, and the centre-forward has absolutely taken the Bundesliga scene by storm. To date, he has 57 goals and 15 assists from just 59 games for the Black and Yellows.
The 2020/21 campaign was a huge success for Haaland as he plundered 41 goals and set up 12 more for his teammates from just 41 games, helping Dortmund lift the DFB Pokal and finish in the top four. And, his exploits in Germany haven’t gone unnoticed, with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City all holding an interest in the striker, along with Real Madrid.
It is no secret that Los Blancos are in the market for a new centre-forward this summer as they look to address the over-reliance on star man Karim Benzema. The Frenchman has carried the goalscoring burden all by himself for three seasons now, following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo with the likes of Mariano Diaz and Luka Jovic unable to provide the necessary support.
In addition, at 33, Benzema is entering the final phase of his career, meaning Real Madrid must lay down a succession plan in place for the Frenchman. While his compatriot Kylian Mbappe has been long linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, Haaland, too, has emerged as a transfer target for the Merengues heading into the summer.
And, it seems like there has been some major progress made in pursuit of the Norwegian international as Pedulla is claiming that Real Madrid and Haaland have reached an agreement over a transfer. However, the Spanish capital club must now strike an agreement with his club, Borussia Dortmund, who are holding out for a massive transfer fee of €175 million for their prized asset.
It must be noted that Haaland has a release clause worth €75 million embedded in his contract, although it will come into effect only next year. So, it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid are ready to wait out a year and sign the 20-year-old at a considerably lesser price or press ahead with the signing this summer itself.
