Arsenal could reconsider an approach for Netherlands international Patrick van Aanholt as they search for a backup to Kieran Tierney.

According to Goal.com journalist Chris Wheatley, Arsenal might be back in the hunt for Patrick van Aanholt as the North London club seeks cover for first-choice left-back Kieran Tierney. The Gunners could sign the Dutch international on a free transfer when his contract with Crystal Palace expires at the end of this month.

Patrick van Aanholt has not renewed his deal with Crystal Palace, a club he joined from Sunderland back in 2017. The left-back once was on the books of Chelsea but could never make the cut in west London. However, the Dutchman, now 30-years-old would like another shot at a big club as his career reaches its twilight years.

There are no shortage of admirers with several clubs interested in the player. Among those are Barcelona, who were thought to be courting him to add cover for Jordi Alba and may make a move if needed. However, if van Aanholt wishes to continue his career in the Premier League and London, then Arsenal could be the place.

The Gunners first registered their interest around January. They searched for a backup after letting Sead Kolasinac leave for Schalke, leaving Tierney as the only recognised left-back. However, their search was inconclusive, costing the Gunners in their Europa League run as Tierney was injured for crucial games.

Arsenal were also interested in Ryan Bertrand of Southampton, but those links have cooled down now. Hibernian’s Josh Doig is on the list among other players, although several Premier League clubs are also courting him. Furthermore, the Gunners seem to be preferring an experienced player rather than someone as young as the Scotsman.

That makes van Aanholt a solid prospect for them, considering his experience, style and free agency. Arsenal could very well afford his wages, which are not exorbitant, although they are clear, this signing would be for a backup purpose only, as they consider Tierney as immovable.

Van Aanholt has made 213 appearances in the Premier League, mainly with Crystal Palace and played 23 times last season owing to niggling injuries. The Dutchman could be the right player for Arsenal to sign at the moment, although a prospect like Doig could also do the trick. His experience and availability on a Bosman move could tip the scales in his favour, however.
