Transfer News: Arsenal weighing up Tyler Adams move

Arsenal offer €47 million to sign Chelsea target Riccardo Calafiori, told to pay more.

Arsenal are reportedly considering a summer swoop for USMNT international Tyler Adams, who has been impressing heavily at current club RB Leipzig.

According to a report from The Athletic, Premier League bigwigs Arsenal are considering a transfer raid on Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig for the signing of Tyler Adams in the summer transfer window.

Adams came through the youth ranks at Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls and went on to make over 70 appearances before Leipzig signed him in January 2019. Since landing in Germany, the 22-year-old has gradually grown into a first-team regular for Die Roten Bullen, racking up 66 appearances thus far, in which he has two goals and three assists.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, Adams has been used as a right-back or a right wing-back at Leipzig to good effect over the past year or so. And, as per the report, that is the position where Arsenal see a future for the 14-time capped USMNT international.

Arsenal are set to offload Hector Bellerin this summer, who will need to be replaced at the Emirates. Cedric Soares is an option at Mikel Arteta’s disposal, but the Portuguese defender has blown hot and cold during his time with the Gunners. Calum Chambers did impress at right-back towards the end of the 2020/21 season, but Arsenal seem to be prioritising a move for a new right-sided full-back before next season kicks off.

To that end, Emerson Royal had been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, but the Brazilian has signed up for Barcelona instead. Brighton & Hove Albion youngster Tariq Lamptey is said to be another target on the radars of the north London giants, with Adams now emerging as an option.

As iterated earlier, the USMNT star primarily is a defensive midfielder who can do the job at right-back. And it is being claimed that this versatility appeals to Arsenal as Arteta likes to deploy his full-back in an ‘inverted’ system wherein they end up veering into the middle of the park, making Adams a good fit, at least on paper.

Nevertheless, a move for the 22-year-old seems a distant possibility this summer as RB Leipzig have no intentions of selling him, given that they are already losing two first-team regulars in Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate. The fact that Adams still has four years left on his contract puts the Saxony-based outfit in a solid position as well. As a result, Arsenal might have to look elsewhere to bolster their right-back department this summer.
