Manchester United have reportedly managed the secure the capture of Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who will be unveiled at the start of next month.

According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Tom Heaton is on the verge of a sensational return to Manchester United. The veteran Aston Villa goalkeeper has finalised a deal with his former club, over a potential move this summer.

United, however, aren’t expected to unveil Heaton until July 1st, when the transfer window officially kicks off. The goalkeeper, though, will undergo his medical at Old Trafford later in June, before signing a two-year contract that can be extended up to three years.

A completed move to Old Trafford will mark a sensational return to the club for Tom Heaton, who is a product of the Manchester United youth academy. After his playing trade with U18, the Englishman was notably promoted to the senior side back in 2004, when he used to play under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Unfortunately, Heaton’s career path saw him spend multiple loan spells at clubs like Swindon Town, Cardiff City, Wycombe, Royal Antwerp and Rochdale, before the ‘keeper signed a permanent contract with Cardiff in 2010.

The 35-year-old, though, rose to prominence during his time at Burnley – a club he joined back in 2013. Heaton instantly became the number one for the Clarets, even playing a key role behind their promotion winning 2013/14 campaign.

During his time at Turf Moor, the goalkeeper made a total of 200 competitive appearances, before moving to Aston Villa in 2019. Unfortunately, the Englishman has recently fallen behind Emiliano Martinez in the pecking order, while his contract at Villa Park expires at the end of the season.

It means Manchester United are going to secure his services for free – a sensible move as the Red Devils continue to suffer from a goalkeeping dilemma at Old Trafford, perplexed between the two choices in Dean Henderson and David de Gea, who is being heavily linked with a return to Atletico Madrid.

Nevertheless, Heaton is likely to serve as a direct replacement for Sergio Romero and Lee Grant, simultaneously becoming the preferred alternative for either de Gea or Henderson.

Some reports also suggest that the 35-year-old is going to be offered a coaching role, for young goalkeepers. It makes sense as the Aston Villa veteran has garnered a lot of experience in English football over the years, becoming a useful asset for youngsters as well as someone like Henderson.
