Real Madrid are reportedly still interested in securing the services of Paul Pogba from Manchester United with a squad overhaul on the cards this summer.
According to a report from Spanish publication AS, reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid still hold a strong interest in Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba and could launch a move for the Frenchman in the summer.
Pogba has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for a couple of years now, with the midfielder himself having made no secret of his desire to play for the Merengues in the past. There have been attempts made by the La Liga giants in the past to secure the services of the 28-year-old but Manchester United have always held firm.
However, that may change in the upcoming summer. Pogba is set to enter the final year of his contract with the 20-time English champions. And, as of now, there have been no talks of a renewal. The 2018 World Cup winner’s agent, Mino Raiola, had hinted in the past that his client may not sign an extension at all and look to move on this summer.
But, since those comments were made back in December last year, Pogba has turned over a new leaf in terms of performances on the field and has emerged as one of Manchester United’s best players during the second half of the season. Nonetheless, given the situation, Real Madrid, who have held a long-standing interest in the Frenchman are once again sniffing around, as per AS.
The upcoming summer will be a critical one for Real Madrid as they are in need of a mini overhaul of sorts given that a number of their players are into the final stages of their career. Midfield is one area where fresh faces are necessary as Luka Modric will soon be turning 36 years old while Toni Kroos is also in his thirties and will need his game-time to be managed moving forward.
This has seen Real Madrid get linked with a host of central midfielders in recent months, with Fabian Ruiz of Napoli emerging as a target, while Lyon’s Houssem Aouar is also being tailed, although the Merengues are unwilling to meet the Ligue 1 club’s €50 million valuation for the Frenchman.
Now, Pogba has re-emerged as a transfer target for Real Madrid with his contract situation, coupled with the fact that he is in his peak years, making him an attractive proposition for the Spanish champions. However, given their own financial troubles currently, it remains to be seen whether Los Blancos are able to afford a player like the Manchester United star or forced to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements.
