Manchester United are reportedly preparing to offload David de Gea in the summer transfer window and value him at £50 million.

According to an exclusive report from the Mirror, David de Gea is set to be on his way out of Manchester United in the upcoming transfer window, amid a goalkeeping exodus at the club.

David de Gea is one of the longest-serving members in the current Manchester United squad, having been at the club since 2011 when he arrived from Atletico Madrid. Having had starting troubles in England, he would go on to become one of the best in the business in the Premier League as well as in Europe during his time at Old Trafford.

However, over the past couple of years, de Gea has made a string of errors that have hurt his credibility. That, coupled with the emergence of Dean Henderson as an option following his starring season on loan at Sheffield United last time out meant that the Spaniard was under pressure heading into the 2020/21 campaign.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stuck by de Gea for large parts of the campaign, Henderson recently got an extended run in the side when the ex-Atletico Madrid star was away on paternity leave. And the Englishman has made the most of his chances, as he was preferred over de Gea in United’s 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

This could signal the end of de Gea’s time at Manchester United, with the club now ready to offload him in the summer. As things stand, the Red Devils are shelling out a massive £570,000 per week in wages for their five senior goalkeepers and are looking to cut that off in the summer.

Sergio Romero, Lee Grant and Joel Pereira (on loan at Huddersfield Town) will all see their contracts expire at the end of the season and expected to be on their way out. However, de Gea, who is one of United’s top earners at £350,000-a-week, will still have two years left on his deal when the current campaign finishes.

The report states that Manchester United value the 30-year-old at £50 million. However, that price tag could prove to be prohibitive in the current post-pandemic transfer market. So, the club has made it one of the top priorities to solve this conundrum heading into the summer transfer window.

The report even goes on to add that Manchester United may have to cough up a large portion of de Gea’s £36.4 million contract to get him off the books. It now remains to be seen as to what course this story takes in the coming weeks. At the moment though, it seems like de Gea’s time at Old Trafford could be drawing to a close.
