Christopher Nkunku is reportedly among the players on the radar of Arsenal, with the RB Leipzig attacker facing an uncertain future at the club.
A recent report from Sky Germany has shed some light on the future of current RB Leipzig stars. While Dayot Upamecano has already confirmed his move to Bayern Munich, many of his teammates could follow him in departing the Red Bull Arena, including Christopher Nkunku, with Arsenal reportedly on the prowl.
Arsenal, in fact, had eyes on the playmaker even during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, before he eventually opted to join Leipzig in 2019, for a fee of just €13 million. It has proven to be a bargain on Leipzig’s part, as the Frenchman enjoyed a marvellous debut season in the Bundesliga, scoring five goals while registering 15 assists – the third-most in the league last term.
Although Nkunku, with six goals and five assists, has not been able to hit the same heights in the ongoing campaign, there has been a steady elevation in his form. In fact, seven of his eleven goal involvements this season have come in 2021, with his contributions in front of goal playing a key role in helping Die Roten Bullen keep up with league leaders Bayern Munich.
However, it has also put Arsenal on red alert as the Premier League giants continue their search for a playmaker in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Gunners have currently made Martin Odegaard their transfer priority, hoping to sign the Norwegian on a permanent deal from Real Madrid.
However, they fear that Los Blancos could end up demanding a hefty price tag as they themselves have good reasons to keep hold of the talented no. 10, who has done wonders at the Emirates. Arsenal’s potential failure in pursuit of Odegaard could force Mikel Arteta to shift his attention towards alternatives, with the club recently being linked with a move for Nabil Fekir.
In Nkunku, though, Arteta could find himself a more dynamic alternative, who is far superior on the ball and is more tactically versatile than the likes of Fekir and even Odegaard.
Having played under the tutelage of the incredibly talented managerial prodigy Julian Nagelsmann, the Frenchman has learned to operate in several areas of the pitch, including the entirety of the wide left flank as well as the number ten role and even as a false nine.
Such versatility could prove to be hugely useful for Arteta, not only in terms of squad rotation but also in regards to the player’s accommodation into his preferred setup. And with the Nkunku reportedly facing an uncertain future at Leipzig, it could be an ideal opportunity for Arsenal to secure his services this summer.
