Liverpool are among clubs keeping tabs on Youri Tielemans, although Leicester City are determined to keep hold of the star midfielder.

A recent report from The Sun, and perhaps unsurprisingly so, has offered a negative update in Liverpool’s pursuit of Youri Tielemans. The Leicester City midfielder, who is reportedly wanted by Jurgen Klopp, has apparently pledged his future at the King Power Stadium, expecting the dawn of a new era at the club, under the leadership of Brendan Rodgers.

“This is a club where you have the best environment you can have, especially with the new training ground. The people around you just want the best from you. It’s brilliant to be here and I really like it here.

You can’t predict the future or whether we are ready to win trophies but everything around the club and inside the club is already in place to produce success.”, Tielemans was quoted as saying, when asked about his future at Leicester.

It serves as a massive blow for Liverpool, who were hoping to secure his services in the summer. Manager Jurgen Klopp has already hinted at a busy transfer window for the Reds in the aftermath of a brutal injury crisis during the 2020/21 campaign.

While Liverpool’s need for reinforcements in the defensive department has already been well documented, they could require further options in midfield as well, especially with Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

The Dutchman, in fact, has been linked with a move to FC Barcelona for a free transfer, while Naby Keita has had his problems with injuries. It leaves Klopp a bit shallow in terms of his midfield options, especially if Fabinho does continue as a centre-back from next season. And that is where someone like Tielemans could have been useful.

Since joining the Premier League in 2019, the Belgian has already showcased what he is capable of. And under the leadership of former Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers, the midfielder has become an indispensable figure at the base of Leicester’s formation, forming an excellent partnership alongside Nampalys Mendy.

Tielemans’ ability to march forward with the ball, combined with his urgency, aggression and long-range shooting prowess would have made him an upgrade over Wijnaldum an Anfield. And at the age of just 23, the Leicester City midfielder could have indeed been a smart long-term investment for the Reds.

Klopp, though, could look at other available alternatives this summer, including Florian Neuhaus, whose more creative oriented style of play could offer a new dimension to the club’s attacking approach. The German may cost a fortune, however, with Borussia Dortmund also reportedly interested in his services.
