Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has urged the club not to revive their interest in Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho this summer.
Speaking to Betfair, as relayed by the Mirror, Dimitar Berbatov has advised former employers Manchester United to not chase the signing of Borussia Dortmund and England star Jadon Sancho in the summer transfer window.
It is no secret that Manchester United were hot on the trails of Sancho all summer long last year. However, a move failed to materialise as Dortmund dug their heels on the Englishman’s valuation, which the Red Devils were unwilling to meet.
Instead, Manchester United decided to invest in two other wide players in the form of Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo, who joined the club from Serie A side Atalanta earlier this month. However, murmurs of the 20-time English champions being set to make a move for Sancho once again in the upcoming summer have been doing the rounds of late.
Indeed, reputed German journalist Raphael Honigstein recently hinted that Manchester United could reopen talks with Borussia Dortmund in the spring over the possibility of signing Sancho later this year.
Berbatov, however, is of the opinion that his former club would be better off without launching a move for the England international. The ex-Red Devils’ striker claims that the club would find it difficult to fit Sancho into the team, as has been the case with last summer’s recruit Donny van de Beek.
“I have read more rumours about Jadon Sancho at Dortmund and how United could sign him. So, you sign Sancho and where do you play him? They will have lots of games in the Europa League and FA Cup, but then what happens to people like Donny Van de Beek. It would be Van de Beek two if they sign him. Yes, he is a great player but then do you just have too much talent,” Berbatov said.
The former Bulgarian international also went on to add that if Manchester United go on to lose Sancho to another club it would not be a major blow and that he does not expect a deal to go through in the summer.
“If Sancho signed for another team or a rival it wouldn’t be a blow. Sir Alex Ferguson got rid of players because no-one is bigger than the club, they were replaced. That’s still the case, no one is bigger than Manchester United, so, I’m not expecting anything to happen,” he said.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to have found a successful formula in attack in the trident of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial, with Edinson Cavani for cover. However, neither Greenwood nor Rashford are natural right-wingers – a position that has been a huge problem area for Manchester United for years now.
And even though there are high hopes on Diallo to be the long-term solution for the problem, he has very little expereience at the first-team level. So, bringing in someone of Sancho’s proven quality could be a game-changer for Manchester United. It remains to be seen if the Red Devils do make a move for the Englishman come summer.
