Manchester United will reportedly look to reopen talks with Borussia Dortmund over the possibility of signing Jadon Sancho in the summer transfer window.
Speaking on the Transfer Talk Podcast (h/t Sky Sports), journalist Raphael Honigstein has hinted that Manchester United could consider re-entering negotiations with Borussia Dortmund in the spring over a move for England international Jadon Sancho.
The 20-year-old winger, who has grown into one of the most exciting young stars in Europe since switching from Manchester City to Borussia Dortmund in 2017, was a top transfer target for Manchester United last summer. The Red Devils were intent on bringing Sancho back to England but Dortmund’s valuation prohibited the move from being completed.
Having stayed put in Germany, Sancho endured a slow start to the 2020/21 campaign. However, he has slowly regained his form in the second half of the season. So far this term, the England international has produced a return of six goals and eleven assists from 22 matches in all competitions.
With Manchester United having missed out on his signing in the summer last year, Honigstein insists that they could make a move for him again, however, adding that there is little possibility of a move happening in the ongoing window. Instead, he expects any talks to take place in the spring, with a potential transfer going through at the end of the season.
“No one’s stopping United, if they went out, and felt really confident, to say, ‘let’s do this deal now, let’s make sure we get in now’. And maybe then announce it at the end of January. That’s inherently possible. We just haven’t seen or heard anything to suggest that they are indeed ready and willing to come back to that negotiation at the moment,” Honigstein said.
“I think everyone at Dortmund is under no illusions that the player wants to leave. But they think that the offers and the real negotiations will start closer to towards spring when clubs are perhaps in a better position to understand how much money they’ll have available for their transfer window in the summer.”
Manchester United, for their part, did bring in a couple of right-sided wingers in the summer in the form of Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo, with the latter joining the team from Atalanta earlier this month. However, someone of Sancho’s ilk and proven track record would elevate this Red Devils’ outfit to a whole new level.
It had recently been claimed that Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side were going to prioritise a move for Sancho’s teammate, Erling Haaland. However, Honigstein’s comments indicate that there could be still a few more chapters left to unfold in the ‘Sancho to Manchester United’ saga later this year.
