Liverpool have set their sights on a potential move for LOSC Lille midfielder Renato Sancho in the summer transfer window.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently shed light on Liverpool’s interest in Renato Sanches. In his Here We Go podcast, Romano has confirmed that the Premier League giants are scouting the LOSC Lille midfielder, with an eye to make a potential move in the summer transfer window.

Sanches’ performances in Ligue 1 have already put multiple European giants on red alert. In fact, the Reds could face stiff competition from league rivals Manchester United in the pursuit of the former Bayern Munich midfielder, who has emerged a lynchpin in the Lille midfield, helping the club keep up with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyon in the middle race this season.

Liverpool’s desire to secure the services of Sanches comes as no surprise, considering the fact that the club could brace itself for a potential overhaul in the midfield unit. Although Jurgen Klopp’s men have signed Thiago Alcantara in the summer, key midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has been linked with a move to FC Barcelona while James Milner is already in the final phase of his career.

It leaves Klopp with Jordan Henderson as the only reliable option in midfield, with Fabinho often being used in central defence. Even Naby Keita has struggled with multiple fitness problems while Curtis Jones doesn’t have a lot of experience at the highest level of football. And that is where Sanches comes into the fray.

A central midfielder by trade, the Portuguese international is an exceptional ball-carrier in the middle of the park. His nimble footwork, combined with his ability to create chances and distribute possession could add another dimension to Liverpool’s approach play in central midfield.

Sanches could particularly shine alongside someone like Thiago, with Henderson providing the additional dynamism and physical attributes. It should make the Reds much more versatile as they brace themselves for the departure of Wijnaldum.

In addition to his qualities, Liverpool could have an excellent opportunity to sign Sanches on a cut-price given the fact that French football is suffering from a major financial crisis. And although that doesn’t necessarily mean that Lille will be willing hand him over for cheap, it could allow the Reds to sign him up without having to dig deep in their pockets.
