Out of favour Arsenal duo, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi, are reportedly being chased by Serie A outfit Genoa.
According to a report from GianlucaDiMarzio.com, Serie A side Genoa are working on a double raid on Premier League heavyweights Arsenal in the ongoing transfer window for the signing of defenders Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi.
Sokratis has been with Arsenal since the summer of 2018, having signed from German giants Borussia Dortmund. Having been a regular in the starting XI for most of his time at the Emirates, the 32-year-old has fallen down the pecking under ever since Mikel Arteta took over the reins midway through last season.
Indeed, Sokratis did not play a Premier League game in the post-lockdown period last season and has been completely omitted from the Gunners’ official squad for the ongoing season. The defender has played just twice in 2020/21, both for Arsenal’s reserves.
With his contract up for expiry at the end of the season, Arsenal are ready to offload him this month. Having been linked with a return to Italy in the summer, the 32-year-old has once again popped up on the radars of a Serie A club, with Genoa interested.
Sokratis has had a spell at Genoa previously, having joined the club in 2008. He spent four years with the club, although he was out on loan for two of those years. It is now being claimed that Il Grifone are eyeing a reunion with the centre-back this month.
Along with Sokratis, Genoa have also made contact with his Arsenal teammate Mustafi over a January transfer. The German international, who has been with Arsenal since 2016, has fallen out of favour under Arteta in recent months. Much like Sokratis, his contract, too, expires at the end of the season and the Gunners are open to cashing in on him in January.
The 28-year-old had been linked with a shock move to Barcelona, but the Catalans have since distanced themselves from the Arsenal star, paving the way for Genoa to make a move. Mustafi, too, has experience of playing in Serie A, having spent two-and-a-half years with Genoa’s local rivals Sampdoria between 2012 and 2014.
The report claims that at this stage, a deal for Sokratis looks more likely to go through, even though the Greek defender is waiting on an offer from Fenerbahce. Genoa could be willing to match Turkish giants’ proposal and offer him a contract till 2023 to bring him to the club. It remains to be seen if either of Sokratis or Mustafi end up making the move back to Italy.
