Manchester United star Timothy Fosu-Mensah has reportedly rejected a new contract offer from the club amid interest from Marseille, AS Monaco and Hertha Berlin.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Timothy Fosu-Mensah has turned down a new three-and-a-half-year contract offer from Manchester United and is weighing up his options ahead of the January transfer window.
The versatile defender joined Manchester United in 2014 from boyhood club AFC Ajax and made his first-team debut in February 2016, under then-manager Louis van Gaal. However, his career has failed to take off at Old Trafford.
Fosu-Mensah had unmemorable loan stints away at Crystal Palace and Fulham in the 2017/18 and 2018/19, seasons respectively. Having been back at the club in 2019, the Dutchman spent the majority of the last season out injured before making a handful of appearances towards the end of the season.
With Diogo Dalot being loaned out to AC Milan this past summer, it seemed like Fosu-Mensah will be the second-choice right-back for Manchester United behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka. However, the 22-year-old has played just three times throughout the campaign, totalling up to 108 minutes of on-field action.
Recent games have seen manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer use the likes of Axel Tuanzebe and Victor Lindelof at right-back ahead of Fosu-Mensah, in Wan-Bissaka’s absence.
Fosu-Mensah’s current contract with Manchester United expires at the end of the ongoing season. And despite his lack of game-time, the Red Devils reportedly offered him a new deal that would have seen him stay put at the club until the summer of 2024.
However, the three-time capped Netherlands international has rejected the proposal, after the two parties failed to agree on personal terms. And Fosu-Mensah is now considering his options, as he will be able to negotiate with foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer starting from January 1.
The report states that Fosu-Mensah is attracting interest from Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin while Ligue 1 clubs Marseille and AS Monaco are also said to be monitoring the 22-year-old’s situation.
It remains to be seen if any of these clubs will be making a move for the defender in January or wait till the end of the season to sign him. Even if the clubs sign him after his contract runs out, Manchester United will be entitled to a compensation fee. Should Fosu-Mensah leave, youngster Ethan Laird could be expected to step up to the first-team.
