Liverpool reportedly remain keen on signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente but could face competition from Bayern Munich and PSG.
According to a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, reigning Premier League champions Liverpool are interested in signing Atletico Madrid’s Spanish midfield star Marcos Llorente.
A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Llorente made his senior debut for Los Blancos way back in 2015 but managed just 39 appearances. He made the switch to neighbours and arch-rivals Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019 and has gradually grown into an important member of Diego Simeone’s side.
In 55 matches for Los Rojiblancos, Llorente has scored 11 goals and set up eight more, with six of his goals coming in on the ongoing campaign. A defensive midfielder by trade, the 25-year-old has been used as an auxiliary forward to great effect by Simeone throughout this year, while he has also been used on the right side of the midfield.
Llorente’s new-found versatility and his ability to score goals has brought him a lot of admirers with Liverpool being one among them. Recently, the Spanish international’s agent revealed that he had received a number of calls from the Reds over the possibility of signing him in the summer.
And, as per the aforementioned report, the Premier League champions still remain keen on Llorente. As things stand, Liverpool have a well-stocked midfield department, having added Thiago Alcantara in the summer while Curtis Jones has also become a full-fledged first-team member this term.
However, there are question marks over the future of Georginio Wijnaldum, who reportedly has his heart set on a transfer to Barcelona as his contract nears expiry. So, bringing in a new midfielder either in January or in the summer could become a priority for Jurgen Klopp & co.
Llorente, with his versatile nature and experience at the top level, can be a handy addition for Liverpool. Apart from the Merseyside giants, both Bayern Munich and PSG are said to be interested in the 25-year-old.
However, Llorente recently stated in an interview that he is very happy at Atletico Madrid and has no intentions of leaving the club anytime soon. Furthermore, any team wanting to sign him will have to meet his €120 million release clause. So, any move for the 25-year-old in the near future does seem highly unlikely.
