Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal worth around the £500,000 mark for highly-rated Birmingham City youngster Calum Scanlon.

The Times have reported that Liverpool have secured the signature of another highly-rated youngster, with Calum Scanlon snapped up from Birmingham City. The deal that will see Scanlon join the current Premier League leaders is reportedly set to cost Liverpool around £500,000.

Youth recruitment has become an expensive proposition in the current market. Clubs like Manchester United and Manchester City have chosen to spend millions on a single youth signing several times now and while the likes of Liverpool have not exactly been competing with the same financial razzmatazz, the Reds have been quietly adding to their youth department as well.

The latest name set to be added to the youth squad at Anfield is Calum Scanlon. The 15-year-old Birmingham City youngster likes playing on the left and can play both on the defence and in midfield out wide on his favourite side. Scanlon is also an England youth international and is highly rated within the Birmingham City camp.

Scanlon’s decision to leave a club like Birmingham City, who would provide a faster track to the first-team, for a Liverpool side that have a cut-throat competition for places even in the academy teams, is a bold one. But, it is backed by Jurgen Klopp’s preference to give youngsters a chance, be it to cover an injury crisis or to rotate a thin squad.

The 15-year-old took to Instagram to relay the news about his impending move to Liverpool and his exhilaration at having secured a move to join the defending Premier League champions.

His Instagram post read, “Happy to sign with @liverpoolfc. A big thank you to @bcfc and everyone who has helped me progress to this point, but as of today I start a new chapter. The hard work continues, let’s go! #ynwa”

£500,000 may look like a lot for a 15-year-old but is more than fair in today’s fledgling youth market. It will now depend on Scanlon to progress and prove to Liverpool that he was more than value for the money paid to Birmingham City.
