Arsenal are among clubs eyeing a move to Maxi Gomez, who is expected to be offloaded by Valencia due to financial crisis brought upon by Covid-19.

According to Daily Mail, Arsenal are set to be involved in the pursuit of Maxi Gomez in the upcoming January transfer window. The Valencia forward is widely expected to be sold either next month or in the summer, with Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested in his services.

Gomez reportedly has a staggering release clause of £125 million embedded in his Valencia contract that expires in 2024. However, the Spanish outfit could be forced to offload the striker for much cheaper as they look to combat the financial crisis inflicted by the Coronavirus pandemic this year.

Gomez has historically been linked with a move to Premier League, including Manchester United. So it’s hardly a surprise why clubs Arsenal and Wolves have been put on red alert regarding the striker’s recent situation at Valencia.

Arsenal, in particular, are now in desperate need of offensive reinforcements in January, with Mikel Arteta now finally feeling the pressure following a mediocre start to the campaign.

The Spaniard is somewhat culpable for star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s complete loss of form as he has netted only two goals in eleven matches this season. The Gabonese international has often featured in an unnatural wide role. which although was working last season, has been completely ineffective this time around.

Other strikers include Alexandre Lacazette, who has been performing well in recent matches but clearly lacks the confidence to emerge as Arsenal’s main man while Eddie Nketiah has been unlucky with a lack of chances in the Premier League.

The addition of someone like Gomez, therefore, could offer more options for Arteta. The Uruguayan international, unlike any of the Arsenal’s front three, is equipped with the physical and aerial prowess that could be useful for the team. In fact, it tunes in perfectly well with their style of play and it won’t be surprising to see him forming a deadly partnership with Aubameyang upfront.

It is, however, fair to point out that Arsenal are more in need of a playmaker. While there has been an evident lack of productivity, they have struggled to create too many chances, to begin with as Arteta continues to ostracise star man Mesut Ozil, who, in turn, has been linked with a perhaps predictable move to MLS.
