Manchester United are leading the chase to sign Velez Sarsfield attacker Thiago Almada, who is keen on a switch to England.

According to a report from TodoFichajes, Manchester United’s pursuit of Thiago Almada could soon come to a conclusion as the Velez Sarsfield winger closes in on a move to Old Trafford. Both the sides are in advanced stages in the negotiations and the move could be done and dusted within the coming weeks.

Almada himself is keen on taking the next step in his career by leaving Velez Sarsfield in the upcoming January transfer window. The youngster was previously linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, but a move did not materialise.

The strong European interest in Almada is hardly surprising given his solid track record in Argentina, with the player having been involved in 16 goals in 51 competitive matches for Velez Sarsfield. He has recently starred in Copa Diego Maradona, netting two goals in four matches.

Almada, however, isn’t the only winger linked with a move to Manchester United, who are set to add another winger in January with the arrival of Atalanta’s Amad Traore. The Ivorian youngster had agreed to join the club in the summer, but the move will be made in the upcoming winter transfer window.

Despite Traore’s pending arrival, Manchester United’s pursuit of Almada suggests that the Red Devils are growing desperate to find a reliable alternative for Jadon Sancho. They have recently been linked with a move for Leicester City’s star man Harvey Barnes, while they were favourites to Ousmane Dembele in the summer before the transfer fell through.

United’s hunt for a new winger has been accentuated by Daniel James’ failure of breaking into the first-team while Juan Mata is nearing the final phase of his career. In addition, Jesse Lingard has struggled with a lack of game-time and injuries, though all of this bodes well for Almada.

Although the young Argentine is an attacking midfielder by trade, he can play anywhere across the final third. He can thus offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a host of tactical options at his disposal, alongside Traore. And as it turns out, these two might be the safer options for the club as well, if we consider Sancho’s receding form and Dembele’s awful injury record.

It is, however, fair to point out that both these players are mere long-term options for the Red Devils so it won’t be surprising to see them taking time to settle themselves into the high-paced nature of the Premier League.
