David Seaman is backing Arsenal to rekindle their interest in Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha next summer.
As reported by Goal, Arsenal have been urged to sign Wilfried Zaha by former goalkeeper David Seaman. The club legend believes that the Crystal Palace star is still a viable target for the Gunners and can bring a lot to the table for Mikel Arteta.
“I think Zaha would be a good addition to Arsenal because he’s a proven goalscorer,” the legendary former Gunners goalkeeper told the Target Men Podcast.
“I don’t know the reason why it hasn’t happened as he obviously wants to come. Whether it’s the agents and clubs not agreeing certain things, that must be the reason, but he’s made it clear that he wants to come as he’s an Arsenal fan. He would be a good addition to the squad, no doubt at all,” Seaman added.
The 57-year-old’s comments come just a few days after Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves that saw them extend their winless run in the Premier League to three games. During this time, the north London giants have found it difficult to find the back of the net, especially with their star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang misfiring this season.
More importantly, the wide attackers like Willian, Nicolas Pepe and Reiss Nelson have all failed to provide any penetration or productivity going forward. So Seaman’s suggestion of signing Zaha certainly makes sense, especially if we consider the winger’s experience in the Premier League.
Zaha, in fact, was close to sealing a move to Emirates in the summer before the Gunners eventually settled for Pepe, who was brought in from LOSC Lille. It appears Crystal Palace’s hefty £80 million valuation was enough to put off not only Arsenal but also their London rivals Chelsea.
Palace’s reluctance in offloading Zaha seems to have paid off as the Ivorian has been firing on all cylinders in the new season. His five goals have helped the Eagles remain above the drop zone in these early parts of the campaign, with the winger also registering two assists.
Zaha’s ability to take on defenders and provide penetration in the final third is something Arsenal have lacked this season, particularly from their marquee signing Pepe. Unfortunately for the Gunners, however, any move for the Palace winger is unlikely, even in the upcoming summer, as the team primarily needs a playmaker right now, in order to fill the shoes of Mesut Ozil.
