Transfer News: Motherwell accept Liverpool, Leeds offers for Sam Campbell

Liverpool unwilling to pay Romeo Lavia asking price.

Liverpool and Leeds United have reportedly had offers accepted by Scottish Premiership outfit Motherwell for prodigious young defender Sam Campbell.

According to the report from Football Insider, Motherwell have accepted bids for Sam Campbell from three Premier League clubs. Liverpool, Leeds United and Brighton have all had their offers for the young defender accepted by the Scottish Premiership outfit.

The report, however, says that the Premier League trio including Liverpool are on course to face rejection. Motherwell have offered a professional 3-year contract, something they can do in Scotland, where players are eligible to sign a pro deal at 16. There are chances the Scottish Premiership outfit actually holds on to Campbell, which would be nothing short of a coup.

Motherwell are hopeful of retaining Campbell, who is widely regarded as one of the best up-and-coming defenders in Scotland in his age group. The 16-year-old has spent time on trial at Liverpool and other clubs, playing in different age groups and the clubs are clearly impressed, given the fact that all three of them have put offers on the table.

Motherwell can be lauded for the confidence shown in the process and in Campbell’s ability to make the choice. The Scottish outfit accepted the bids tabled from the likes of Liverpool, Leeds United and Brighton and left it to Campbell to decide, with a professional deal also on the offer.

16-year-old Sam Campbell will take into account that Motherwell is also regarded as one of the best clubs to nurture young talent in Scotland. The Scottish outfit will also provide the young defender with a more definitive and quicker pathway into the first-team setup.

Liverpool though, could provide the examples of Rhys Williams, Nathaniel Phillips along with Sepp van den Berg. There’s also Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has come from the academy setup to become a regular for the club while Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips are now compensating and acting as cover in the absence of Virgil van Dijk.

Whatever Campbell might decide, Motherwell’s ability to fast-track the 16-year-old’s promotion to the first-team will hand them the advantage in this scenario, despite the stature of clubs like Liverpool, Leeds and Brighton.
