Bayern Munich contract rebel David Alaba has reportedly been offered to La Liga champions Real Madrid, with Liverpool also interested.
According to Spanish publication TodoFichajes, as relayed by Calciomercato, La Liga champions Real Madrid have been offered the chance to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba. The Austrian is also a target for Premier League champions Liverpool.
The 28-year-old Alaba has been with Bayern Munich since 2010 and has been an integral part of the success that Die Roten have enjoyed over the last decade. Primarily a left-back, the Austrian has transformed himself into a centre-back in recent seasons and has excelled in his secondary position.
However, Alaba now seems set for an exit from the Allianz Arena next summer. The 28-year-old is currently in the final year of his contract with the Bundesliga champions and talks over a new deal have broken down after the defender turned down their latest contract offer.
Bayern reportedly put forth a five-year deal with an annual salary of around €11 million, which could have increased to €15m with bonuses, as reported by ESPN. However, Alaba’s representatives found the offer unsatisfactory, following which the Bavarians have withdrawn from negotiations, with the defender now staring at an exit.
Alaba’s potential free agency in the summer next year has alerted a number of teams such as Juventus, Inter Milan as per Calciomercato. However, it is being claimed that the 28-year-old has been offered to Real Madrid, who have previously shown an interest in the defender.
Considering that both Sergio Ramos and Marcelo are entering the final stages of their respective careers, adding someone of Alaba’s quality and versatility would certainly bode well for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
But, Los Blancos will have to stave off interest from Premier League champions Liverpool, who are also keeping tabs on the Austrian’s situation, as per Calciomercato.
Jurgen Klopp’s side allowed Dejan Lovren to leave this past summer without bringing in a replacement. This has come to haunt them as mainstay Virgil van Dijk has been ruled out for a lengthy period due to an injury, while Joel Matip’s fitness issues continue to be a concern.
There have been reports of Reds wanting to bolster their defensive ranks in January, but they are understood to be considering a free transfer swoop for Alaba next summer as well. Even if the Reds do sign a defender in the winter transfer window, signing a player of Alaba’s proven pedigree should be a no-brainer as he would improve the overall quality of the squad.
Alaba will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement over a free transfer from January 1. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the Austrian international.
