Real Madrid are reportedly not ready to hand captain Sergio Ramos a new two-year deal as his current contract comes close to expiration.

According to a report published by AS, Real Madrid are not ready to hand Sergio Ramos a new two-year deal. The Spaniard’s contract ends at the end of the 2020/21 season, and his contractual situation is yet to be resolved as we enter November.

Ramos has been at Real Madrid since 2005, maintaining his place in the team through multiple captains, managers, and tactics. He also had the opportunity to play with several legends of the sport such as Zinedine Zidane, Guti, Cristiano Ronaldo and many others.

A decade after his arrival at the Spanish capital, Ramos was made captain of the club following Iker Casillas’ departure to Porto in 2015. By this point, Los Blancos had already secured a Champions League courtesy of his late equaliser, but he went on to captain the side tho three consecutive UCL titles since being named captain.

This news comes on the back of Madrid’s victory in the El Clasicowhere the 34-year-old won the game for his side, winning and scoring a penalty and displaying top-notch defensive prowess.

Ramos’ contract, however, expires at the end of the season. Despite being 34, he has shown that he can lead their defence. The defence has been evidently in splits, having lost eight of their last nine Champions League games without him; the recent one coming last week against Shakhtar Donetsk.

During last season’s league title-winning celebrations, club president Florentino Perez claimed that Ramos would finish his career at Real Madrid and that he is more than just a captain. As it stands, however, the club captain and the club are at crossroads.

The club has reiterated its stance on contract extensions to players over 30 years old, stating that they will not extend their contracts for more than a year at a time. Ramos, who finished as the second-highest scorer for Madrid last season, has asked the club to go out of their way to present him with a contract twice that length.

Sergio Ramos was also key in negotiations as players across their football, and basketball outfits agreed to a 10% reduction in salary, consequently saving the club nearly €50 million. Departure on a free transfer would be the worst breakup to a 16-year marriage for the two parties, who clearly thrive in the symbiotic relationship they have developed.
