David Ornstein claims that an Arsenal move could be imminent for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey, who has completed his medical in Spain.
Arsenal have received a major boost in their pursuit of Thomas Partey, who has completed his medical in Spain and is nearing his move to north London, according to David Ornstein.
It was Ornstein, who broke the story of Arsenal paying the €50 million release clause to sign Partey this summer, earlier this evening. The Gunners have since acted swiftly and are on the verge of their biggest acquisition of this summer transfer window, as we head towards the final few hours of the deadline day.
Signing a new midfielder was always on the wishlist of manager Mikel Arteta this summer, with Arsenal being heavily linked with a move for a certain Houssem Aouar. Unfortunately, the Frenchman’s €50 million asking fee proved to be too much, with the player himself opting to remain at Olympique Lyon.
Thomas Partey too will cost Arsenal €50 million. But it seems the apparent loan deal of Lucas Torreira has played a key role in role in pushing this transfer, with the Uruguayan midfielder having already passed his medical at Atleti days ago.
? Thomas Partey medical took place in Spain today as Arsenal close in on signing the 27yo Ghana int’l midfielder from Atletico Madrid via the payment of his €50m release clause.

Both the deals make sense for Arsenal, especially for Arteta, who never really managed to accommodate Torreira into his first-team plans. The ex-Sampdoria star lacked a proper identity in the starting lineup, with the same thing also applying for Matteo Guendouzi, who has joined Hertha Berlin on a season-long loan deal.
Partey, in contrast, could prove to be an instant upgrade over someone like Granit Xhaka. He is an excellent passer of the ball and his form has been on the upward trajectory over the past couple of years. Not to mention, the Ghanaian international also brings in loads of experience at the highest level of football, having made almost 200 competitive appearances for Atletico.
More importantly, the 27-year-old could provide that physical presence in midfield, as well as better defensive coverage, thus allowing Dani Ceballos more freedom to dictate the play with his remarkable passing and positioning sense. It could ultimately improve the overall creativity that Arsenal have lacked over the past couple of years.
However, the Gunners will be disappointed to have failed to offload any more fringe players, with the shutdown of Bundesliga’s transfer market ruling out the possibility of Sead Kolasinac’s potential move to Bayer Leverkusen. William Saliba is also likely to remain at Emirates, after being linked with a shock move to Leeds United.
