Transfer News: Liverpool sign 16-year-old German whizkid Melkamu Frauendorf

TSG Hoffenheim wonderkid Melkamu Frauendorf has apparently confirmed his move to Liverpool on Instagram.

As reported by Daily Star, Liverpool have added yet another promising young player in their ranks in Melkamu Frauendorf. Although the Reds are yet to make any official announcement, the youngster appeared to have already confirmed the transfer through Instagram, with a changed bio reading “@liverpoolfc”.

Frauendorf is still technically contracted to TSG Hoffenheim U-17 squad, although the 16-year-old was expected to be handed a promotion, at least to the U18 squad if not to the reserves. But, it seems the attacking midfielder will now be on his way to Liverpool’s youth setup.

Frauendorf’s departure from Hoffenheim could serve as a major blow for the Bundesliga outfit. They have already lost a host of their talented academy products in recent years, including Bayern Munich’s double swoop of Mamin Sanyang and Armindo Sieb earlier this year – one that forced the club’s CEO to speak out against the Bavarian’s “poaching business“.

In Frauendorf, they had yet another talented youngster, who had shown a lot of promise in the U-17 Bundesliga this past season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists. The playmaker was also a regular for the German U15 and U16 teams.

One of the things that made Frauendorf such an in-demand prospect is his versatile nature as he can operate anywhere across the final third. The 16-year-old has also impressed the onlookers with his fluidity moving forward while his pace makes him a scourge for the defenders on the counter.

Moreover, the Ghana-born youngster has tremendous work-ethic for a player of his age. So it seems like he could be an ideal fit for Jurgen Klopp’s tactical philosophy.

But even from a general sporting perspective, a switch to Liverpool’s world-class training facility could only help Frauendorf improve his game and although not many young players from the academy have been able to make a mark in the first-team over the past 18 months, it could surely change in the future as the Reds look to add more depth in the attacking department.

In the meantime, Frauendorf, once Liverpool announces his move to Anfield, must remain focused on making an impression for the club’s U-18 side, where he will have to compete with one of the most talented sets of players across the Merseyside. It will surely be interesting to see how the German develops his game in the coming years.
