Jesse Lingard has emerged as the latest Manchester United star to urge Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho to move to Old Trafford this summer.
As reported by Evening Standard, Jesse Lingard has urged Jadon Sancho to join Manchester United, becoming the second Red Devils’ player to do so this year. The Borussia Dortmund star has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford following an excellent campaign in the Bundesliga.
Lingard has no doubts about the quality he would bring, saying: “Jadon is a brilliant player. It is obviously up to him. I’ve seen him with England, I’ve seen his qualities, and I feel like he’d be a great addition to any team.”
Sancho himself is believed to be keen on a move to Manchester United. However, the transfer situation is much more complicated with Borussia Dortmund reluctant on offloading him for anything less than their asking price of £100 million despite the coronavirus pandemic taking a huge toll on player valuations across Europe.
Manchester United chairman Ed Woodward was reportedly preparing an £80 million bid for the English international in a last-ditch attempt to lure him to Old Trafford. And while there has been no update since, Sancho still faces an uncertain future at the club, especially Red Devils now on the verge of securing UEFA Champions League football next season.
Heading into the final matchday of this season’s Premier League, Manchester United only need a draw with Leicester City to secure a top-four finish, which should give them a massive boost in pursuit of Sancho as there is no secret that the ex-Manchester City youth sensation prefers to play in the Champions League.
Sancho’s addition to Manchester United could be the final piece of the jigsaw for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men following an impressive restart period that saw them find the right balance in attack as well as the emergence of Mason Greenwood.
Indeed, the youngster has already netted 17 goals in all competitions in the ongoing campaign and is destined for a more prominent role in the first-team next season. In fact, he could give direct competition to Sancho, in case the Borussia Dortmund star does arrive at Old Trafford this summer.
But from a broader perspective, the English international should provide an additional creative spark, as well as, pace and dynamism, that should provide more targets for playmakers like Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.
In the meantime, however, it will be interesting to see how Manchester United perform against Leicester City this weekend as their fortunes in the Sancho pursuit do rely on their qualification to the Champions League next season.
