Leicester City have tabled a £31 million offer for Real Madrid forward Luka Jovic as their search for Jamie Vardy’s backup continues.
According to a report published by The Sun, Leicester City have identified megastar turned megaflop Luka Jovic as Jamie Vardy’s backup and long term replacement, and are ready to table a £31 million offer for the Real Madrid flop.
Jovic moved to Real Madrid on the back of a spectacular season with Eintracht Frankfurt as they reached the semi-finals of the Europa League and finished 7th in the Bundesliga. He formed a tremendous partnership with the Sebastian Haller and Ante Rebic scoring 17 goals and setting up five for his teammates. He was one of Europe’s most courted player and was on the radar of teams like Juventus, FC Barcelona, Manchester United among others.
However, his life in the Spanish capital has gone into turmoil. Jovic has failed to find his feet in La Liga, scoring just two goals in 16 appearances, out of which, just four were starts. His form, though, was just the start of his problems in a new country.
In March, this year, the 22-year-old was publicly called out by the President of Serbia for breaking quarantine rules when he ventured out to celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday. And then as recently as yesterday, Jovic has been asked to self-isolate after coming in contact with with a potential COVID-19 patient. He has not been picked in the squad list for their game against Deportivo Alaves.
Fair to say, it has been an extremely tough year for the young forward, but it could get worse as Madrid are reportedly open to selling him in light of the financial impact caused by the pandemic. Leicester have come forward as one of the parties interested and have tabled a £31 million offer for Jovic.
Leicester’s protagonist in attack, Jamie Vardy has shown no signs of wear and tear since leading the side to promotion in 2014. He has gone to score 103 goals in these six years and is also the leading contender of the Premier League Golden Boot with 22 goals. However, at 33, the Foxes cannot really expect Vardy to carry on for much longer.
Kelechi Iheanacho has shown signs of improvement, often coming up with the goods but cannot take over the legacy of Vardy. Jovic, on the other hand, has shown immense quality on the top level and could serve as an able deputy to the Englishman before taking over as the full-time first-choice striker.
