Liverpool and Manchester United target Ferran Torres has poured cold water on transfer speculation over his future by confirming he is content at Valencia.
According to a report by Mirror, Ferran Torres, who was linked with a switch to Manchester United and Liverpool among other teams, has claimed in an interview with Spanish outlet Club Del Deportista that he is content with life in La Liga right now.
Valencia’s prodigious winger Ferran Torres finally has the world at his feet after first breaking out in the 2017/18 season aged just 17. He made 13 appearances in the league in his first season and quickly gained a reputation among La Liga clubs as someone who could well be on his way to becoming a world-beater.
The 20-year-old has registered four goals and four assists this seasons in the 25 appearances he has made in the league. These numbers are not indicative enough of how talented the Spaniard is, and why several top clubs, like Manchester United and Liverpool, are chasing his signature.
Torres, who has been linked with Real Madrid in the past, has a €100 million release clause. However, according to Mundo Deportivo, he does not want to renew his contract, which expires in 2021, as Barcelona close in on a deal which can go through for a mere €35 million.
This summer would have been Valencia’s last chance to cash in on the prodigious talent, but things seem to have taken a turn for the better for the Spanish outfit. In an interview with Club del Deportista the Manchester United and Liverpool target said, “For young people, La Liga is the best league there is. It is helping me a lot and I am learning all the time.”
“I think I have settled in Valencia and in the division,” he added. “Things are going well for me even though the team is on a bad streak, although we think we are going to turn it around.”
One win in seven matches in all competitions is the bad streak Torres has referred to. This poor run of form has seen Valencia drop to seventh in the league, three points off Atletico Madrid in sixth, and just five off Sevilla in third place.
Torres is key to Valencia’s plans for the future, but could already be worth a sum upwards of €60 million, an amount Manchester United might be willing to pay in case they are unable to land priority target Jadon Sancho this summer. The 20-year-old can play on either wing, but is at his best on the right side, a position United have found troublesome for several years running.
As for Liverpool, Torres could serve as a worthy backup for either Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane before taking up the starting role from any of the two in due course. That said, Jurgen Klopp might have shifted the Reds’ priority towards Adama Traore, who has been extensively linked with a move to Liverpool, and could arrive at Anfield this summer itself.
In his interview, Torres does not mention anything about the talks regarding his contract extension, so it will be interesting to see this transfer saga unfolds in the coming months, with Manchester United and Liverpool both showing an interest in him.
