Transfer Rumour: Liverpool weigh up Diego Carlos option

Liverpool unwilling to pay Romeo Lavia asking price.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in Brazilian defender Diego Carlos, who has a €75 million release clause embedded in his Sevilla contract.

Spanish publication Marca have reported that Liverpool are weighing up their options and are looking at Diego Carlos as a potential summer addition to their squad in the summer. The Sevilla star has been previously linked with the current Premier League leaders and is one of many names shortlisted by the club, as per the report.

The report also states that Sevilla are aware that Diego Carlos and Lucas Ocampos will be heavily courted during the summer. The losses suffered has put a dent on their ability to sign players. But, Monchi has been advised to draw up a plan where offloading one of the aforementioned sought-after stars could rake in enough money to reinvest into the squad.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are not ready to spend crazy either, which could make this transfer difficult. Jurgen Klopp is looking to add depth to his squad with reasonable signings and budget transfers. But, Virgil van Dijk does need an absolute partner, something Liverpool have failed to find within.

The Reds have been impressed by Joe Gomez but have seen the likes of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip falter at times, thus raising the question of a quality addition in the said position. Diego Carlos is a no-nonsense defender and his skillset is a throwback to the classic centre-backs that dominated the previous era in football.

But, Carlos can be helpful in counter-attacks with his ability to hoof the ball long more accurately than others. Diego Carlos has a good head on him that is equally dangerous on both parts of the pitch. His defensive acumen along with his robust nature make him a reliable partner for van Dijk, who can then have more freedom to venture forward whenever needed.

Ideally, Liverpool would want to negotiate a much lower fee for Diego Carlos when compared to the €75 million release clause. But, Sevilla would look at this as an opportunity to bank enough money to be able to reinvest into the squad this summer. This move entirely hinges on Liverpool’s decision to spend and as to the extent they are ready to go to land the 27-year-old Brazilian.
