Transfer News: Inter Milan set to beat Liverpool to Sandro Tonali capture

Sandro Tonali, who was earlier tipped to join Liverpool from Brescia, is now reportedly on his way to join Inter Milan this summer.

As reported by French outlet Le 10 Sport, Sandro Tonali is on the verge of joining Inter Milan from relegation struck Brescia Calcio in the summer transfer window. Liverpool have also been interested in signing the young Italian midfielder.

Tonali has been courted by some of the biggest teams in the game after his impressive series of performances since Brescia’s promotion prior to the 2019-20 season. The 20-year-old broke into Brescia’s first team in the 2017-18 season as a 17-year-old and was rewarded with 34 appearances the following campaign.

He featured as a starter and was a huge part of Le Rondinelle’s campaign which saw them finish top of the second division, earning them a long due promotion after they were relegated in 2010-11. This season, Tonali has played in 23 of the 26 Serie A games and has registered one goal and five assists in those minutes. His exploits have attracted Liverpool and others

Liverpool boast of a rather lacklustre midfield and have relied on their full-backs for creativity for over two seasons. Jordan Henderson has excelled this season, but he revels as a defensive midfielder while no other Liverpool midfield star has the required creative abilities to make an impact from the middle of the park.

Tonali, who has exceptional passing and vision could be an important change of pace for Jurgen Klopp. Moreover, most midfielders on Liverpool’s payroll are either in the final phase of their career (James Milner, Adam Lallana) or are soon going to enter it (Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson).

Tonali’s playing style best resembles a certain Andrea Pirlo, who also started his career at Brescia. Both the players play similar formations as well, slotting in as a deep lying playmaker or a defensive midfielder. The youngster has been applauded for showing maturity and an understanding of the game beyond his years.

As a result, apart from Liverpool, Tonali has also been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, PSG and Inter Milan, among others. It now looks like Inter are set to beat Liverpool and the rest of the suitors to the signature of Tonali.

Indeed, Tonali’s playing style fits best in Italy. And that is why, Inter is the ideal destination for him. There is not a plethora of midfielders in Antonio Conte’s team and this could be Inter Milan’s chance to bring in an exceptional talent who does not want to move out of Italy.

Furthermore, a move to Inter seems like the perfect stepping stone for Tonali, who could use this as a relay to gain a broader audience and move to a bigger club – perhaps Liverpool – in the future. For now, though, a switch to San Siro seems to be on the cards for the young midfielder.
