Transfer Rumour: Arsenal keeping tabs on Jonathan David

Arsenal offer €47 million to sign Chelsea target Riccardo Calafiori, told to pay more.

Arsenal are interested in Jonathan David and are reportedly considering the Gent striker as a potential summer replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arsenal are already preparing for life after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, if the report from The Mirror is to be believed.  The Gunners are looking at prospects to replace the Gabonese forward and have locked their eyes on Gent striker Jonathan David as a potential summer recruit.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal look destined to miss Europe altogether by the looks of things. The Gunners are currently 9th and if their Premier League position doesn’t improve drastically, they run the risk of not only losing out on just Champions League football but European football entirely.

In such a scenario, Arsenal might see the cream of their crop leave, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang undoubtedly topping the list. The Gabonese forward is already 30 and has courted genuine interest from top clubs in the recent past. A year without European football, let alone the Champions League, might be too much of an ask from Aubameyang, who could move on to a club that can offer him the same.

Along with that, Arsenal’s potential inability to qualify for Europe will also seem them take a financial hit and that is likely to reflect in the transfer budget made available. This makes Gent forward Jonathan David an ideal and realistic prospect in the summer.

Jonathan David has been on fire in the Belgian Pro League for Gent, with 18 goals and 8 assists in 27 matches. His form has brought forth interest from top European clubs, with Premier League giants like Chelsea, Manchester United, Leicester City and Arsenal all taking a keen look at the 20-year-old.

His international record also bodes well, with 11 goals in 12 games for Canada. Arsenal have already seen a young forward in Gabriel Martinelli come in and have a huge impact, becoming a regular fixture in matchday squads.

Matteo Guendouzi did the same last season and the rise of Bukayo Saka, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and more have perhaps shown Arteta that the path forward in this rebuild is targeting a young forward with the hunger to play for the badge.

Metro have reported that Gent will be ready to cash in on Jonathan David for £17.5 million, which is more than reasonable for a striker in the form he is in.
