Tottenham Hotspur have completed the permanent acquisition of Giovani Lo Celso, who has penned a five-year contract with the North London giants.
Tottenham Hotspur have made an official statement that they have exercised the option to turn Giovani Lo Celso’s loan move into a permanent one. The playmaker joins from Real Betis, in a five-year deal that will expire in the summer of 2025.
This was simultaneously announced with the departure of Christian Eriksen, who signed for Inter Milan on a permanent deal, thus ending a long transfer saga. Meanwhile, Tottenham have reportedly had to pay a fee of £27 million in order to permanently attain Lo Celso’s services.
On paper, both of these deals makes complete sense. While Eriksen’s departure from north London created a massive void in the creative department, it will likely be filled in by his Argentine counterpart, who, of late, has shown a lot of promise.
Indeed. After suffering from a hip injury for a chunk of the campaign, Lo Celso has gone from strength to strength, especially following a bumpy start under Jose Mourinho. The 23-year-old has only managed four starts in the Premier League this season, three of which came in the last six matches.
Lo Celso’s performances against Southampton (in the FA Cup) and Watford, in particular, raised a lot of eyebrows. But, despite the permanent signing of the Argentine, things are looking bleak for Mourinho. His side has secured only one league win since the turn of the year. Hence, it could be even more imperative for Lo Celso to improve his performances and make a mark in the English top-flight.
The Lilywhites are still lacking a reliable alternative for Harry Kane as of now, which has forced Mourinho to deploy both Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura in a central role. As a result, they have failed to provide enough support in the supply lines, and that’s where Lo Celso’s creativity could come in handy.
That being said, lack of creativity isn’t the only problem Spurs are facing. With the defence lacking resilience and the absence of a secondary forward, one can imagine Lo Celso potentially being identified as a scapegoat should Tottenham eventually fail to live up to the expectations come the end of the campaign.
Therefore, the pressure on the Argentine will be immense as he looks to fill in the shoes of Eriksen, who can easily slot into Tottenham’s Team of the Decade.
