Transfer News: Tottenham closing on Steven Bergwijn capture from PSV

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on their second transfer of January, with PSV sensation Steven Bergwijn set to join the club in a £30 million deal.

As per a report from the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are set to complete their second signing of the winter transfer window, as they are close to completing the capture of 22-year-old Dutch forward Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven.

It is no secret that Tottenham are in the market for attacking reinforcements following a serious injury to Harry Kane which has ruled him out for the foreseeable future. A number of names like Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose and AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek have been linked with a move. However, it seems like Tottenham have turned their focus towards Bergwijn.

The 22-year-old started out at the Ajax academy before joining rivals PSV’s youth setup in 2011. Having broken into the first-team in 2015, the forward has accumulated 149 appearances so far, scoring 31 goals and assisted 41 more, winning three Dutch Eredivisie titles in the process.

The ongoing campaign has seen Bergwijn score 6 goals and set up 13 more in 29 appearances across all competitions. The 22-year-old is a versatile attacker capable of playing across the frontline, which has appealed to Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho.

Bergwijn was left out of the PSV squad for Sunday’s game against FC Twente after Tottenham lodged a bid, with reports claiming that the 22-year-old refused to play for the Dutch giants. However, the forward has refuted those claims in a post on his social media account.

“There is a whole lot written about me, which I have also read myself. I am really disappointed that it has come to this, there is no truth to it. I never refused to play for PSV, and would never do that. I have been there since I was young. PSV is in my heart. I have never refused to play for PSV, as you can see the media spins everything,” he said.

“I have indeed called the trainer, Ernest (Faber), this morning, and said that talks are going on, and he gave me permission. We had a good chat, and he wished me luck, everything went respectfully and according to plan.”

Bergwijn is set to cost Tottenham in the region of £30 million, due to a buyout clause existing in his contract with PSV. The report states that Mourinho and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy held negotiations with Bergwijn’s representatives last week and have been able to work out an agreement.

Bergwijn is understood to be in London to finalize the deal and the transfer is very much expected to be completed in the next 48 hours. Should he sign, the 22-year-old will be the second signing this month, following the loan arrival of midfielder Gedson Fernandes.
