Manchester United have reportedly had a loan offer rejected for Uruguayan midfielder Matias Vecino by Serie A giants Inter Milan.
As per a report from Sky Sports, Manchester United have been thwarted in their attempt to sign Matias Vecino from Inter Milan, as their loan offer for the 28-year-old has been rejected by the Nerazzurri.
Manchester United’s season is in complete disarray with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under immense pressure to turn things around after their calamitous 2-0 defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford. Injuries haven’t helped the Red Devils’ situation with the midfield department particularly hit hard by fitness issues.
Manchester United have been without talisman Paul Pogba for most of the campaign, while Scott McTominay, who had been one of the few members to perform consistently this term, also finds himself on the sidelines. This has left Solskjaer with Fred, an inconsistent Andreas Pereira and an ageing Nemanja Matic as the only viable options in the centre of the park.
Manchester United are believed to be closing in on signing Bruno Fernandes from Sporting CP, but the Portuguese is likely to be utilized in the role of a creator, leaving the club in need of someone to provide cover in the deeper areas in the centre of the park.
To that end, the 20-time English champions had been linked with Boubakary Soumare, but they seem to have since switched their attention to Inter Milan’s Matias Vecino. The 28-year-old has been with the Nerazzurri since 2017, having signed from fellow Serie A club Fiorentina and has made 88 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals in the process.
However, the Uruguayan international has found regular playing time hard to come by in the ongoing campaign, with manager Antonio Conte preferring Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic and Stefano Sensi ahead of him. As a result, Vecino has started just 10 of Inter’s 20 Serie A matches in the 2019-20 season.
Manchester United were hoping to capitalize on Vecino’s situation by offering to take him off Inter’s hands for the rest of the season with the idea that the 28-year-old would be a good short-term option till the likes of Pogba and McTominay complete their recovery and return to peak fitness.
However, the Nerazzurri have rejected Manchester United’s offer for Vecino as they were not happy with the terms of the deal that were put forth by the faltering Premier League giants, according to the report. Instead, they are looking to use the Uruguayan as a makeweight in their attempt to land Brazilian enforcer Allan from league rivals Napoli.
It is no secret that Manchester United are in serious need of reinforcements ahead of the second half of the season. And with just a week left for the transfer window to close, Manchester United have their task cut out to identify and sign alternate targets, having seemingly missed out on Vecino.
