With multiple defenders injured at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta wants to bring in defensive reinforcements in January with Jerome Boateng being one the top targets.
According to a report on Sky Sports, Arsenal are interested in Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng. Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in defensive reinforcements in the winter transfer window and feels that the experienced German defender will help the Gunners defensively.
Boateng is eager to leave Bavaria in January and despite the defensive conundrum that Bayern are facing with multiple defenders injured, the record Bundesliga champions are willing to sell the 31-year old for around €15million transfer fee.
The German international has been a mainstay for Bayern over the years and have made over 300 appearances for the record champions winning seven successive Bundesliga titles and have also won the much-coveted Champions League back in 2013.
Sky Sports already revealed that after spending heavily on players in the summer, the Arsenal board were reluctant to splash more money on new transfer in the January transfer window. However, with Callum Chambers out for nine months with a knee injury, the transfer plans may have changed.
With William Saliba set to join Arsenal next summer from Saint Etienne, Arsenal have shortlisted Boateng as their primary transfer target. RB Leipzig star French centre back Dayot Upamecano is also on the radar for the Gunners. However, Leipzig are reluctant to let Upamecano leave in January as they are top of the Bundesliga table and have also entered the Champions League round of 16.
Arsenal have had their issues in defence over the years and someone experienced like Jerome Boateng may bring that calmness in the backline. He can be the leader that Arsenal needs and can also guide the young defenders at North London and can be a good addition to the team in the middle of the season.
Boateng predominantly has played as a centre back for Bayern Munich and Germany national team but can also slot in as a fullback if required. He can be a utility player for Arsenal and his experience will be of great use to Mikel Arteta’s men.
If things stay in Arsenal’s favour Boateng may join the North London club and it will be a huge boost for Mikel Arteta and the Gunners in their pursuit to achieve a top-four spot in the Premier League.
