Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is reportedly a target for Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan in the January transfer window.
As per a report from The Sun, Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has emerged as a transfer target for Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan ahead of the winter transfer window.
Matic has been with Manchester United for a little over two years now, having arrived from rivals Chelsea back in the summer of 2017 in a £40 million deal. The Serb was a huge hit in his first season at Old Trafford, but his form has deteriorated over the past year or so, inadvertently leading to a major reduction in his game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Matic has started just two of Manchester United’s eight Premier League matches, but has been involved from kick-off in the Red Devils’ Europa League assignments. The lack of game time has not gone down too well with the 31-year-old, who was believed to be seeking showdown talks with the manager regarding his future towards the end of the summer window.
With things not improving for him, the report claims that Matic is ready to quit Manchester United at the end of the season when his contract with the 20-time English champions runs out. However, the midfielder could be provided an early escape route from Old Trafford as Inter Milan are seeking his signature in the January transfer window.
The Nerazzurri had been linked with a move for the Serbian international during the summer window as well, but a move did not see the light of the day. However, Inter manager Antonio Conte, who worked with Matic at Chelsea, is believed to be still keen on signing the 31-year-old as he seeks to boost his options in the midfield department.
There have been negotiations between Inter Milan and Matic’s representatives, with the player understood to have responded positively to the possibility of a switch to Italy. But, the report further adds that the midfielder wants to see out the season with Manchester United and help them out of their early season slump.
Even if he decides to stay put till the end of the campaign, Inter will make an attempt to land him in the summer, according to the report.
Matic is in the final year of his contract with Manchester United, although the club possess the option of extending it by a further twelve months. There have been talks held over the possibility of a new deal, but it is unlikely that the 31-year-old would want to sign an extension given his lack of playing time.
It certainly seems like Matic’s time at Old Trafford is nearing an end, with Inter emerging as a strong candidate for his signing. But, it remains to be seen if he decides to jump ship mid-season or stays till the summer before moving on to a new club.
