Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly close to penning a new and improved contract worth £290,000-a-week.
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is finally on the verge of signing a new bumper contract with the club, as per a report from the Guardian.
David de Gea’s current contract with Manchester United is due to expire at the end of the 2019-20 season. Negotiations over a new deal had been going on for a very long time now, but the two parties weren’t able to arrive at an agreement, which had become a major cause for concern for the 20-time English champions.
Reports in July had claimed that the 28-year-old Spaniard was close to agreeing a new long-term contract worth £350,000-a-week with Manchester United. However, The Sun reported last week that de Gea was set to snub the offer put forth by the Red Devils and had decided to move on from Old Trafford when his current deal expired.
Amidst these reports, Serie A champions Juventus had emerged as a potential destination for de Gea. The Bianconeri were reportedly planning to open talks with the Spanish international in January to explore the possibility of a summer transfer.
There had been further speculations that Manchester United were already preparing for life without their star goalkeeper. The Red Devils were reportedly planning a swoop for Atletico Madrid custodian Jan Oblak in the next summer window, as a potential replacement for de Gea.
However, Juventus’ attempts to sign de Gea are likely to be foiled now, if the report from the Guardian is to be believed. The report states that the 28-year-old goalkeeper has agreed terms over a new deal with Manchester United and is close to signing the contract.
As per the terms of the new deal, de Gea would stand to make basic wages of £290,000-a-week, which would put him on par with midfielder Paul Pogba as one of the highest earners at Manchester United. The length of the new deal, however, hasn’t been specified in the report.
De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011. After a dodgy first season, the 28-year-old has become an indispensable member of the team, amassing 366 appearances winning a Premier League title, a League Cup, an FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League in the process.
The Spaniard has suffered a dip in form over the past year or so, but remains an integral part of Ole Gunnar’s Solskjaer. And the report of him nearing a contract extension will come as music to the ears of the Manchester United supporters.
