Manchester United are reportedly set to make an attempt to sign Tottenham superstar Christian Eriksen in the January transfer window.

As per a report from The Sun, Manchester United are set to raid Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the winter transfer window as they look to sign Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen’s future at Tottenham was a subject of intense transfer speculation all summer, after he claimed that he was ready for a new challenge in his career and was ready to move on from his current club. This led to a flurry of interest in the midfielder, mainly from La Liga giants Real Madrid as well as Manchester United.

Given that Eriksen is in the final year of his contract, Tottenham considered the possibility of a sale and were reportedly demanding a fee of £70 million – a valuation that Manchester United were willing to meet. However, Eriksen had his heart set on a transfer to Madrid, which led to the Red Devils ending their pursuit of the Spurs star.

The 27-year-old did not get his desired move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish transfer window closing earlier this week, which has now opened up a window of opportunity for Manchester United to swoop in and make another attempt to sign Eriksen in January.

Manchester United haven’t made the best of starts to the season, having failed to win since their opening day victory against Chelsea. The lack of creativity in the final third has been a major issue for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and an injury to star midfielder Paul Pogba could further make things worse for the 20-time English champions.

To that end, signing someone like Eriksen would be a step in the right direction for Manchester United. The Danish international would be a major upgrade on the current options at Solskjaer’s disposal for the No. 10 role, namely Jesse Lingard, who is woefully out of form and Juan Mata, who doesn’t quite fit well with the high-press football that the manager is trying to introduce.

Eriksen has made a solid start to the 2019-20 campaign and has scored a goal in his four outings so far for Tottenham. But, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Spurs might be open to selling him in the winter window instead of losing him on for free in the summer, although the valuation is likely to drop significantly from their initial demand of £70 million.

Given Manchester United’s desperate need for a creative force in the side, they would be willing to meet Tottenham’s demands. However, it remains to be seen if they will be able to convince Eriksen to make the switch.
