Manchester United and Inter Milan are reportedly set to re-enter negotiations to finalise a loan deal for superstar Alexis Sanchez in the next 72 hours.
As per a report from the Mirror, Inter Milan have reopened negotiations with Premier League giants Manchester United, as they look to sign Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez on loan for the 2019-20 season.
Sanchez’s future at Manchester United has been mired in uncertainty after eighteen months of struggle since making a sensational transfer from Arsenal in January last year.
The 30-year-old has managed to find the back of the net on only five occasions till date from over 40 appearances, finding it hard to establish himself as a regular in the Red Devils’ side and failing to justify the monumental £500,000-a-week wages that he is earning at the club.
Sanchez showed signs of form during the summer’s 2019 Copa America for the Chilean national team, but is keen on securing a move away from Old Trafford as he looks to resurrect his career. There had been some degree of interest from Serie A side AS Roma, but his wages proved to be a stumbling block in the deal.
Since then, Roma’s rivals Inter Milan have emerged as a potential destination for the 30-year-old, with the Nerazzurri’s manager Antonio Conte keen on raiding on United again after having signed Romelu Lukaku already this summer.
The Serie A heavyweights are planning to sign the former Arsenal superstar initially on loan, with an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the 2019-20 season. However, negotiations had hit a snag with Inter Milan not meeting Manchester United’s demands.
As per the report, the Red Devils want Inter Milan to pay at least £5 million of Sanchez’s wages in the loan deal with a £15 million option to make the move permanent next summer. But, the Nerazzurri’s initial offer was nowhere near the figures mentioned, leading to breakdown in talks.
However, with the transfer deadline less than a week away, Inter are planning to make another effort to try and sign Sanchez and are hoping to finalise a deal within the next 72 hours.
Manchester United lack depth in the attacking department following Lukaku’s departure. The club have just Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial as the senior centre-forwards with academy prospect Mason Greenwood as cover. And Sanchez could have been an option for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, more so considering Martial picked up an injury at the weekend.
However, should the right offer come along, the Red Devils will not stand his way, the manager confirmed. “Alexis is a quality player. We don’t have loads of options. If there is an offer that’s good enough for the club and him maybe he will go, but if not then he’s still our player and he’s a quality player,” Solskjaer said.
With Inter keen on signing Sanchez and the player himself intent on a transfer, there is a good possibility that the 30-year-old does end up leaving Manchester United before the European transfer window slams shut.
