Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has put pen to a new contract, extending his stay at the club till the summer of 2023.
England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool, the club confirmed on their official website on Thursday night. The midfielder has now committed himself to the reigning European champions till the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Liverpool from fellow Premier League rivals Arsenal in the summer of 2017 and went on to feature 42 times in all competitions, scoring 5 goals and setting up 8 more before an ACL rupture towards the end of the season sidelined him for a year.
The 25-year-old returned to action towards the end of last season and made two appearances. And after a full pre-season under his belt, the Englishman has taken the field thrice in four games in all competitions, including starts in the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea and Southampton in the Premier League – his first league start in sixteen months, during which he impressed.
A regular member of Jurgen Klopp’s side when fit and available, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s previous contract would have expired in 2022. And the midfielder has now put pen to paper on a new deal extending his stay at Anfield till the summer of 2023.
Speaking after completing the contract extension, the 32-time capped England international said, “I’m really, really excited – it’s been in the pipeline for a little while, so it’s nice to finally get it done and just extend my time here, which I am really looking forward to.”
“I feel like I missed out on a year, which I obviously did, so it’s really exciting for me to be able to sign. It’s something that I feel is an opportunity to give that year back and make up for lost time – and hopefully put in some good performances to make amends for not being around last year.”
“You’ve got to count your blessings every time you get an opportunity like this, you don’t get the chance to play for Liverpool Football Club every day. I am really excited to be able to extend my time here.”
Manager Jurgen Klopp also expressed his delight at the news of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract extension saying, “When I heard Ox had signed his new contract with us, I am sure my emotions were the same as every Liverpool fan hearing the news tonight – absolutely delighted.”
Having signed the new contract, the 25-year-old would look to celebrate with a strong display when he takes the field against his former club Arsenal on Saturday evening at Anfield.
