Manchester United are reportedly set to offer defensive mainstay Victor Lindelof a new huge contract which would keep him at the club till 2025.

According to a report from the Daily Express, Manchester United are working on securing the long-term future of centre-back Victor Lindelof at the club. The Red Devils are set to hand the Swedish defender a new bumper contract that would see him extend his stay at the club till 2025.

Lindelof signed for Manchester United from Portuguese heavyweights Benfica in the summer of 2017. The 25-year-old endured a difficult first season with the 20-time English champions as he struggled to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.

However, after the settling period, Lindelof emerged as Manchester United’s most solid defender in the 2018-19 campaign. When all of Red Devils’ defensive options failed to impress, the Swede stood out with reliable displays at the back on a regular basis.

Lindelof began the new season with an equally impressive performance in Manchester United’s Premier League opener against Chelsea last weekend. The 25-year-old showed signs of a formidable partnership alongside new signing Harry Maguire, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men secured a clean sheet.

Having been heavily impressed with his growth over the past year, Manchester United are keen on securing the defender’s services on a long-term basis. Lindelof’s current contract runs till the summer of 2021, with the club retaining the option of extending it for a further twelve months.

According to the report, Manchester United are preparing a bumper contract offer for the 29-time capped Swedish international that would double his current wages of £75,000-a-week to £150,000 per week. The new contract being put forth would run till the summer of 2025, meaning Lindelof would stand to make a whopping £46.8 million over the duration of the deal.

Lindelof’s growth in stature over the past season had seen him attract significant interest from La Liga champions Barcelona earlier this summer. And Manchester United are hoping that by tying him down to a new long-term deal would help them stave off interest from any potential suitors in the future.

After a difficult debut season in England, Lindelof has well and truly established himself as a reliable and consistent performer for Manchester United and is very much deserving of a new and improved contract. And with the player himself claiming last month that he was very happy at the club, a contract extension seems a mere formality.
